What Are Kitchen Area Rugs?

By Jason McCall

Kitchen area rugs are simple decorations that can give your kitchen that extra kick of style while not taking up space. Some ones are also very durable while still being soft, so you will not have to worry about getting your feed wet when walking on them. A surprisingly large amount of homes do have at least one rug in their kitchen, even if you have never paid attention to them before. These rugs are some of the more multifunctional area rugs you can have set up in your home.

For many people, the kitchen ranks as one of the messiest and hardest to maintain rooms in the home, so to many laying any sort of rug on the floor seems to not make sense. But it does make sense, especially if the rug itself is made of polypropylene. Polypropylene is a safe and relatively soft material that is resistant to stains and any other sort of dirt. They are also very easy to clean. Though it is mostly used for outside rugs, they are also useful for kitchen rugs because of that durability, and they can still look as stylish as any other rug that you have laid out in your home.

Kitchen area rugs do not have to be made of polypropylene as long as they are regularly washed and taken care of. As a matter of fact, most people who look for a rug to place in their kitchen do not look exclusively for those made with that material. People like rugs because they're soft, and in a way one in the kitchen is like a soft and comforting oasis on a linoleum desert. Polypropylene rugs are soft, but it is not as soft as ones made with some other materials.

How much space is free in your kitchen is going to affect the types of rugs you can lay in it. Is your kitchen spacious or cramped? A common style of kitchen area rug is a sort of walkway, usually from the entrance to the sink or table area. These are great if you want to be able to walk on a soft and warm surface when you are walking around in the heavy traffic areas of the kitchen, and it they can also keep the rugs from getting too dirty from every day usage as well. These work great in both large and small kitchens. If you are not trying to get one that is like a walkway, you could just find rug that will fit in front of your fridge or could go under your dinner table and chairs. These are both common area rug uses in the kitchen as well.

You can really take your kitchen's motif to the next level with a well-placed and appropriately themed kitchen area rug. A little mess in the kitchen once in a while is not going to destroy the rug, and with proper care you can keep it looking in top shape as any other rug in the your home for years to come.

  1. I think using indoor/outdoor rugs in the kitchen is a great idea. Other places that are great for indoor/outdoor rugs are laundry rooms, entry ways inside the home, mud rooms and sunrooms. If you are looking for great outdoor rugs check out www.OutdoorRugsOnly.com for a great selection.
