You can use the word environment when talking about your own individual living space as well as for the planet as a whole. The latter, the natural environment, is a subject of concern to more and more people. The reason for this is that we have not been concerned enough for a long time.
There is a phrase most of us have heard before about spending time in nature. It says that we should leave only footprints and take only photos. But this is not the way we have lived our daily lives. Native Americans once considered how any action might affect the earth seven generations from that time. Current cultures have not been making their choices with this in mind.
Everything that we put into the environment has an effect on it, for better or for worse. Every product that we use ends up as part of the environment. Anything sprayed ends up part of the air we breathe. Asthma and other respiratory problems are more common now than ever before.
Every cleaning product or other chemicals that we use end up in both the water and the ground. And what ends up in the ground and in the water ends up in our food and in us. It is a cycle that has been repeating itself in our recent history and may well play a large part in the increased health problems such as cancers that are cropping up.
When scientists first starting talking about the concept of global warming, it stirred a great deal of controversy. Now, however, it is being accepted more and more widely as being real. More scientists, as well as many leaders in the world, are giving this its due concern.
Individuals are also gaining greater awareness of environmental issues. Part of this is a concern for what can be done by each of us to keep those issues from worsening.
One thing we can all do is to stop using chemicals and purchase products that are natural instead. Fewer poisons in our homes will make us healthier. It will also result in fewer toxins entering the environment which will help the planet and everything on it.
Reduction in the use of fossil fuels can help to reduce pollution as well. One way to do this is to switch to solar power which is not just environmentally smart. After the initial investment, solar power will also help save money.
Waste reduction will also benefit the environment while saving you money. There are many examples of this but one is to start filtering your water at home. By filling your own bottles you will cut down on the plastic in the garbage and save yourself money on bottled water.
Changing from a consumption driven society will not happen immediately. But doing so will save us money and save the environment at the same time. And we will all be safer and healthier as a result.
