The Use of Color For Home Decor

By David Harberson

Imagine life without color: you wouldn't know night from day, stop from go, dead from alive. These and much more are the significance and relevance of color in our lives. In the same way, people react to colors. They are moved by it, and respond to it according to what emotions a particular color may evoke in the seer.

Colors can add personality to a room. Colors in furniture add life and create the mood or tone and character that you want in a particular room in the house. They also create visual illusions. Using particular colors in a room may create the illusion of a wider space, narrower space, brighter room, cozier room, and so much more.

A good interior designer, or a simple housewife has their decorating and furnishing ally in colors. Interior designers or housewives seeking to improve the looks of their homes should not be afraid to use color. They must understand that in decorating a room or picking out other items of home decor, color is extremely significant

However, there are also basic principles when dealing with colors. When you are working with colors in home decorating, there are two basic types--warm and cool colors or tones.

What are warm and cool colors? How do they affect a room? Warm colors are centered around yellows. For example, orange, brown, green. Of course it only includes those in these categories that have a bit or a yellowish (sometimes reddish) tone to them. Veridian green. Olive green. Burgundy red. Dark browns. Red orange, etc. Contrasting colors, or cool colors, are based more on blues, pinks, purples, and lighter red and yellow colors. Each of these categories creates a very different mood for the surroundings. Warm tones create a very heavy look--very severe. They tend to make the room seem a bit smaller. However, designers love these colors for areas such as a library or a study. I personally love the color in a kitchen.

Cool colors or cool tones, on the other hand, are best to use in decorating rooms for the young. Cool colors create a light, breezy atmosphere. These colors also make the room seem a bit larger than it is and less severe. Light-hearted and carefree. These cool colors are good conductors or light.
