Coffee Tables: A Centre Piece for your Living Room

By Sean Lynch

Apart from the fireplace, the main focus of every living room is a coffee table. This type of table came from a table called the European tea table, they are placed in front of the sofa or in the middle of the living room and hold general items needed in the living room. The TV remotes, magazines and candles are the usual things you would see on the coffee table, which are usually made of wood, glass and steel, wicker etc.

It is rare that you would come across the same coffee table more than a handful of times, as each one is chosen to suit the owners tastes and needs. Coffee tables are mostly made from wood which can bring an air of sophistication to the living room whereas if it made out of glass it brings the feel of a modern home and is only suited to such a decor. The can be of varying heights also, most are short making them easy to reach when you are sitting on the couch for example, but there are ones available that are narrow and tall, they are supported by a narrow piece of wood that has been rounded on the lathe. These tables are very elegant.

As is said above, some coffee tables that are made from glass are really only suited to homes with a minimalist design, most glass tables are supported by chrome leg supports and they can have either clear or smoked glass which give different finishes. Some can have a second level for more storage. Another version available today of the glass coffee table is where the glass is supported by chrome legs with a colored base, this alternative design brings a level of funkiness into a living room. This is suited for a new apartment or a studio flat.

The majority of people prefer wooden tables, there is an endless variety of woods to choose from for your coffee table, so you know you will find one to suit your decor. For example there are tables made of lighter colored wood with a clear varnish that protects the wood, or they can go for a dark wood such as mahogany or a dark stain, most tables have drawers for storage which is handy. Coffee tables can be complex designs or in most cases very elegant and simple, such as sturdy solid legs with one or multiple drawers, there really are endless combinations or finish, size and drawer arrangement to suit everyones needs.

No law says that the coffee table has to be in one piece! You can purchase a table that's actually a few small tables that fit into each other when not in use or are separate tables that can be placed around the living room; these types of tables are called a nest of tables and provide an alternative to having one big table in the middle of the room. The nest of tables is perfect for homes with a small living room.

An interesting and pleasant change to the usual coffee table is a circular table, which can be crafted from wood or glass and steel, they can have mini tables tucked beneath it and can be used for many things like, one to hold a vase of flowers, one to hold books and one to hold bric-a-brac.

Every person has different taste in household furniture, whether it be a usual standard sturdy coffee table in a light or dark stained woods, or a modern glass toped table to bring an air of elegance to the living room. A table is really useful for storing items you use everyday in the living room such as the remote, pictures and coffee mugs etc. The customer really has a huge choice of tables, so there is definitely one out there to suit your needs!
