Things To Know Regarding Sash Windows

By Caroline McDonaughy

Home improvements are a common occurrence in the life of a home owner. More people all the time are contemplating using sash windows in their homes. Here is some of the information that has been found.

The first thing to know is that sash windows refer to a style of window that has the panes of glass contained within wooden frames that move. The sashes are the frames. These move either horizontally or vertically. There are two ways that these can be found. One is a style that has one fixed frame along with one that moves. The other allows for both to move.

These windows date back many years. They were common in the late 1600's in England. A lot of the houses still have them and they fit in nicely with Victorian style homes. A great deal of the art people can see in England also display sash windows. Even large churches have been found to have them. They are an easily found site there.

There are benefits that can be had with these kind of windows. A double hung sash window can allow for air exchange to occur in the warm weather. This is a huge cost savings for people as well as many will not need the expense of air conditioning in their home.

When it comes to the bad points it is a fact that these items, particularly wooden kinds are very hard to maintain. The wood is susceptible to rot, mildew or other such problems. Very bad weather is another common issue for them as well. Proper care and maintenance can help extend their life.

When it comes to cleaning them it is a very easy task. Due to the way the hinges function, one side of the window can be detached so a thorough cleaning can be done. While that side is detached the other will lock. This has also been used as an emergency exit by many people.

These windows were made of wood for years but now can be found in other materials like plastic or PVC. This is a huge bonus as theses materials last far longer than the wood. Maintaining them is also a lot easier for owners which is an additional plus.

A huge amount of information can be dug up about sash windows if people would only take the time to look around the web. Numerous websites are available on this subject and a vast amount of data can be found on them. Forums and message boards are another great option that contain a lot of information from people that have been in a similar situation. All of the data people find can then be reviewed so that they make the best decision they feel will suit the situation they are in.
