New Gardeners Should Not Be Without Gardening Books For Beginners

By Flossie Gibbs

No family library is complete without gardening books for beginners. These can be as simple as a book for children to teach them all about the wonders of nature, and provide a young person with simple instructions on how to care for and cultivate seeds into plants. They can be large volumes with glossy photographs of herbs, flowers, or vegetables.

Learning about edible plants that grow wild in the region is something that should not be ignored. In the event of a natural disaster, having this information on hand in a book can save people from starvation. One may even have these plants already growing in their gardens, and they might not even be aware of it.

Many flowers are quite edible, and these can include irises, dandelions, roses, and nasturtiums. With a bit of basic knowledge, anyone can go out into a field or garden and create a colorful and delicious salad to go with their evening meal. These naturally-growing sources of food can provide all the health benefits of store-bought fare, often without the addition of genetically modified organisms or dangerous pesticides and hormones.

Having these volumes on hand can also aid the new gardener with creation and maintenance of their garden beds. A lot of time, money, and energy can be wasted when one does not know how to successfully germinate seeds, or position plants in the best areas. When one is gifted with a plant, the biggest insult to the gift-giver is to place a gift plant in an area with the wrong soils or the wrong kind of sunlight.

One common mistake new gardeners make is to create a beautiful garden bed, then mulch it with pine straw or pine bark. There are only a few varieties of plants which thrive in the acidic soils created by the presence of pine, and an entire garden can be killed in this way. One must know the ideal environment to create for their plants if their garden is to be a success.

Many of these volumes can provide a new gardener with vital information on herbicides and pesticides. There are natural alternatives to the traditional pesticides, and these literary works often include recipes for organic pest control of food plants. This is important knowledge, as no one wants to grow vegetables for food, then soak them in dangerous insecticides that can make them sick.

It is also important to know what plants in the environment are known to be dangerous for children or animals to ingest. Flowers such as the angel trumpet can be deadly, although none pose quite as big a threat as the berries of the deadly nightshade plant, also known as belladonna. These sweet berries are lethal not only to the animals who eat it, but any animal that eats an animal that has been poisoned can die as well.

The best way to ensure the success and safety of any garden project is to purchase gardening books for beginners. Growing flowers and food is a healthy hobby which can be very satisfying, and even provide the household with an all-natural and self-replicating food source. One does not necessarily have to have a yard to do it either, as apartment dwellers can take advantage of container gardening for the same purpose.
