A Steel Pocket Door For Your Home

By Cathy Mercer

In the past a steel pocket door or any kind of pocket door was used to separate two rooms. It was a good idea to have a room that could be used as a large room but was really two rooms in one. When the homeowner wanted to close off one of them they could just slide the door closed. But when they wanted the rooms to combine the doors would slide into the wall giving the appearance that they were never there.

When you have a standard entry that swings wide in order to open you lose all of that space. You cannot put anything in the place where the doors will swing because you would hit it with the door. It is for this reason that people usually choose to use a pocket style as opposed to the normal ones. They are a great way to increase the usable room in an area.

Installing these can sometimes be very tricky because they have to go into the wall. The framing of the wall must be ready to accept the door all the way so that it does not show or stick out past the walls edge. This can be difficult to achieve sometimes if the walls framing is close or the wall cannot be opened without further damage.

The installation kits are sold at the same hardware stores that sell the doors. The proper measurements must be taken and then you will have to decide if you will go with the wood door or the steel door. The same decision must be made about the installation equipment. The hardware store can help and they can, most times, even contract out a crew to help.

It can take a while to find just the right workers or company to install such a project and in some cases the homeowner will want these put into more than one room. It is likely that when this is the case the homeowner might change their mind and alter the amount of doors that they want. Or maybe they might change to a cheaper material.

Most construction companies and handymen can install these for you if you do not already have them in your home. Some of the newer homes already have these types of doors but the steel ones are a bit uncommon. You will usually find these in the business arena a bit more than in homes. A business likes the pocket doors for their style and the fact that they vanish leaving more available space.

Local hardware stores or home builder stores will sell the materials and products that you need and they will also sometimes even be able to contract a crew out to do the installation too. That is, unless you will want to try and do this by yourself. It is possible to do but can be very difficult if you have never done things like this before.

A steel pocket door does not take more than a day to install if you have the equipment and the proper tools. The time involved will depend greatly on the construction style of your home in the first place. This means if the wall is ready for a door like this it will be simple, if not you will have a chore on your hands.
