Designing A Pond Aquascape For Any Yard

By Michael Obrien

Instead of sticking to your normal annual spring routine and only planting flowers and shrubbery this year, try something different by adding a pond aquascape to your landscaping plans. This type of water feature is a great way to add unique interest to your yard or patio, no matter how large or small. It will add a tranquil feeling to just about any space and can become a fun and rewarding hobby.

Creating a pond aquascape can be fun and rewarding. It basically involves installing a water feature that may include plants, fish, rocks, or any combination of the above. Depending on the size of your space, they can be built right in the ground or in smaller above ground tanks or flower pots. They are completely customizable and can be changed around from season to season.

Water features usually have greater visual interest than traditional gardens. This is because of the variety of plants that can be used, which are quite different from those which must be planted in the soil. Running water often adds a sense of tranquility and is another unique feature of most designs. In addition, most fish enthusiasts and gardeners alike will find that maintaining their new water feature is a terrific hobby.

The types of water features you could install are almost limitless, so it is easy to pick something you love that will also work well for your space. A pond aquascape typically includes plenty of plants as well as a few fish. However, some only use rocks arranged in an artistic fashion to create a unique water feature. This type of water feature could be as large or small as you like, depending on the space you have available.

A small design could be used as an indoor accent or placed outside on a small deck or patio. Glass tanks, unique pots or other vessels can be used to create small water features. Fish can be added as long as the proper filtration is also added.

A larger aquascape may be the best choice for a small backyard or an average patio. Installing an in ground design is a very attractive option if you have the space. It allows more space to create a unique design. To add a feeling of serenity to your backyard, a waterfall is another great option.

If your backyard is quite large or if you are landscaping a commercial building or community area, a large in ground aquascape would give many options. Adding accent lighting and landscaped pathways would give the space a lush, tropical feel. The surrounding pathways would provide additional space for planting colorful annual flowers that could be changed out each season.

Adding a pond aquascape to your landscaping plans is a great alternative to simply planting a few flowers or shrubbery. No matter what size you choose, this type of feature adds a unique and tranquil feeling to any space. The ongoing maintenance of both the fish and the plants is a great hobby that far outweighs simply cutting the grass every weekend.
