Practical Office Solutions To Help Conserve The Environment

By Anne Sanders

Much has been said and done about saving the environment with the numerous advocacies and projects that have emerged that aim to do Mother Nature a favor. You, too, can do your share and join in this bandwagon called "going green for the earth". Just a few simple tweaks with the way you do things in the office can earn you a cleaner and healthier earth for future generations.

One way is to replace your old lighting fixtures with newer, more efficient LEDs or CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) which are known to help bring down energy consumption. CFLs, in particular, consume 75 percent less energy compared to ordinary incandescent bulbs and have a lifespan of more than three years. They're considered helpful to the environment as they are known to have low carbon emission properties.

Electricity costs can be greatly reduced when you implement a work-from-home scheme for your employees. The idea is that employees whose function does not require them to be physically present in the office can instead work remotely at least once a week. Just make sure that that there is enough manpower left in the office so that the normal flow of business operations is not disrupted. The scheme shall not only benefit the company, but also the employees themselves who can save a lot on transportation expenses.

Conserve water by having automatic shut-off faucets and low-flow water closets installed in the restrooms. Electric hand dryers are a better substitute to paper towels if you want to lessen waste. Prevent leaks by having all water sources and flow pipes periodically checked by qualified plumbers.

As you become more concerned with the impact that your company has on the environment, you also have to think about the over-all design of your office space. Is the size too small or too big for your requirements? Consider consulting with reputable office interior designers on the optimal use of every square-foot that you have. You might not know it, but a smaller space might be more appropriate which means less air-conditioning needed, thus, less power consumption and lower electricity charges for you. If there is a need to update your furniture and dcor, choose natural, highly sustainable, and easily accessible materials and parts to make way for a "green" office Interior design.
