Condo Interior Design: How Designers Blend Function And Form

By Kate Freeman

Unlike traditional homes, a condo doesn't look and feel homey until it's fully furnished. In fact, a condo rather looks like a box with a size and appearance that is exactly the same as the units next to it.

So if there's one big challenge that interior designers must deal with when designing a condo, it would be coming up with the best ways to turn this space into a warm, liveable home. Without proper interior design, that is quite impossible to achieve. But how does an interior designer turn a condo into a home given its compact space? While high-end units are bigger than usual condo units, a similarly priced home for small families is still more spacious than these units.

The first thing that an interior designer must do is to ask the occupants about their needs. Designers should prioritize their clients' needs because the condo's floor plan will depend on the it. Last-minute changes should be avoided because it will delay the project and require additional cost.

Aside from function, the designer should also focus on form because it will determine the overall look and mood of the interior. For experienced interior designers this is not too challenging a task because in this regard the rules for designing a condo and a home are not different.

And since a condo has a limited space, designers would need only to come up with a main theme and pick a few basic ideas that blend well with the theme. In other words, a residential interior designer only needs a few basic ideas and stick with the main theme to pull off a coordinated design.

Lastly, an interior designer must have a balance eye to incorporate everything that will make the condo look like a home. A coherent design not only looks pleasant but also creates an illusion of continuity, which is very important in designing a condo.

For Singapore interior designers, these challenges are certainly not new to them especially those that specialize in condo interior design. It only follows that for people to find the right interior designer Singapore for their condo, they should choose one with comprehensive knowledge and experience in residential or condo design.
