Great Sash Windows Permit People To Experience Real Style

By Simon Hartley Jumior

An inventor and scientist of the 15th century named Robert Hooke, created Sash windows. It became the rage of all England at the time because of its simple mechanisms that allowed air into a home of someone. It was adopted as the main features of a house in the Georgian and Victorian ages. It consists of two glass panes that have been fitted into a single frame with a six by six look. One panel will slide over the other to open up a space either vertically or horizontally.

Inside the box frame, there is a complicated system of pulley cords, counter weights and wheels. This enables the opening and closing of the panes. This will also ensure that once the pane is up, it will remain in place.

The weights are made from brass or cast iron and don't rust that easily. The weights can also be called spring balances that can take the place of the pulley system. Muntins are the thin wooden frames that separate the individual piece of glass and this gives the six over six look.

It can be quite stunning to see the white box frame and muntins against the wood and the glass. Some old houses are considered as national monuments or museums and there are laws about ensuring that these frames remain well maintained and secure. Simplex hinges are a normal feature that will allow the entire box frame to separate from the window jam.

In order to enable easy cleaning and provide an escape hatch for emergencies, simplex hinges are fitted onto wooden windows and doors. This will allow the entire ensemble to swing out from the jam. These window panes also create an air conditioner for summer. When the pane slides open, the top section will block out the hot rays of the sun because hot air does rise. The cooler air is then allowed into the house as a steady flow.

One way to prevent glass rattling when doing sash window repairs, is to use a silicone sealer to seal the glass pane into the wood. Normally, silicone is impervious to the weather and fully waterproof. More recently, PVC and Vinyl box frames have been manufactured. These panes need much less maintenance. There are many movable parts in this type of frame such as the axle pulley which is a wheel that is set inside the frame which is attached to the sash cord. The horn or joggle is an extension of the stiles that strengthen the joints. They can serve as a decorative feature on the pane and painting and decorating can be a lot of fun.

Sometimes if the wood shrinks, the glass can loosen in the space and can start rattling. The best way to prevent this and to prevent energy leakage is to seal the glass into place. Using a silicone sealer will do the trick because it's normally weather and water proof and it's a good way to keep the drafts from coming in. Most times the glass frames can be made from wood but these days, Vinyl or PVC box frames that provide the same look are being produced.

Sash windows have been around for centuries and are very attractive. With the right maintenance, treatment and care, the opening will last and last. Today there are many other types of materials that can be used to create the same look. They can be maintained easily and look as stunning as an old Victorian house.
