It is similar to anything, how hard do you need to make it. Yes that's an off handed answer but one that's true to ones own nature. By that I mean, things are only as hard or straightforward to do as one imagines it to be. Building a back garden gas fire pit is can be one of those projects.
When I built mine, it was straightforward in design and took only part of a Sat. to make. Since that time though it has gone though countless up-grades, (I can not leave things alone and I figure nothing is ever really done until I am dead and gone). But I like fiddling with things anyway. The majority of people build it once and enjoy it for as long as they would like to. Again the issue is how tough is it to build a backyard fire pit?
If you are an amateur and can handle a trowel a hammer and can transform a wench, you can build a fire pit.
The best place to start is google pictures of fire pits and take a while taking a look at them to see what you like and just as important see parts of it that you loathe. Get a basic notion of what works for you.
Learn all about the basic parts which make up a fire pit, nothing complicated or magical here.
Next google fire pit kits, and find the kit that may work for you.
Now the hard part, where to put it? Why is this hard? No 2 people can agree exactly where anything should be, so it's a matter of compromises. Take some time here and consider it, anticipate every aspect of it. Height, length, width, where breezes in your neighborhood come from, the setting sun, trees other plants, how some distance from the kitchen, back door, is it simple to get to and see or be seen from. Think it though because moving it once it's set up is a pain.
Once all this is done the building of it really is the simple part.
Have a great time with it.
