Using Reed Diffusers In Your Home

By Susan Cooper

We desire to make our houses smell attractive, either because it's our favourite scent or to mask other smells such as cooking. Imagine coming home after a holiday, and instead of your house being stuffy, it smells of citrus and cinnamon due to the reed diffusers installed throughout.

Nice smelling candles or incense always carry a risk of fire and soot, so the diffuser is definitely a safer choice. You would be hard-pressed to settle on which lovely smell suits which room in your home as the variety of oils is so vast, encompassing everything from floral scents to more exotic combinations. Kitchen, entryway, bathroom and living room could be treated to a different fragrance with the option to change them around as you wish to.

Most shops will have a fair selection of oils and diffusers, as well as carrying spare reeds. With such a lot of choice, it will be a simple job to find the right diffuser for each room. In most cases the bottle, reeds and oils will be sold as a unit, but there are some stores that will carry separate oils allowing you to pick what you like.

A fragrance diffuser consists of three parts, the rattan reeds, the oils and the container. The container, usually a small glass bottle, will either come with the pleasant smelling oil already in it, along with a small packet of reeds which act as the carrier for the oils, or the oil would be in a separate container for you to refill your glass display bottle. Ensure you keep the refill in a cool dark area to preserve the contents.

Before your diffuser is used, uncork the little bottle carefully, making sure not to spill any of the oil as it may cause damage to certain surfaces and put your reeds in it. Keep the bottle out of reach of animals and children and let it stand on a coaster or saucer to protect the surface.

Leave the diffuser vessel standing near an open window or in an area that there is a flow of air to allow the wonderful scent of your oil to distribute through the room. Without being overpowered, you will soon be able to enjoy the wonderful fragrance you selected.

If you feel that you can no longer smell the scents, or the smell is too weak, simply remove the reeds carefully and turn them over. Insert the other side into the oil and allow the process to start again. Over time they will become dusty or clogged and stop working. In that case, put new reeds into the bottle. If you need to refill the oil, wash the glass bottle properly with soapy water, allow to dry and fill with oil and new reeds.

Buy the best quality oils that you can, as the cheaper oils will not give you the best result. Often they will be inferior, using synthetic products and not have the best smells. They will certainly not last as long as you'd want them to. A good quality oil will last for several months, depending on the size of the diffuser bottle you are using, filling your home with delightful smells.
