Tips On How To Set A Gopher Trap

By Jana Serrano

Traps for gophers are very reliable methods for gopher population control. Bearing in mind the knowledge that gopher traps resemble mole traps, it is very crucial to for you to be able to differentiate between the two. Proper differentiation between these two traps is the most important step of learning how to set a gopher trap. It is important understanding the fact that, only a few number of traps are able to act as multi-purpose traps for both gophers and moles. It is important therefore to determine which burrower is causing problems to you.

Before anything else, it is wise to know why you need to get rid of gophers. These animals though small can be irritating. They move onto peoples property such as shrubs, vines, crops, ornamental plants, and trees to feed. In addition, estate expansion among other types of property development into suburban areas drives more gopher activities.

To get rid of gophers you will need to decide the method or technique you are going to use. There are three most common methods to trap a gopher and consequently control their population. There is trapping, poisoning and sonic spikes. Trapping is the best method to get rid of a gopher population from your homestead. It entails physically removing gophers and eliminating their habitats.

To set up your traps, find the area with the highest activity. These will guarantee you to trap the highest number of gophers as possible. You should not go setting your traps where the population of these animals is minimum. You may end up not trapping any. Do not set your traps on the dirt hill. Commonly, the dirt hills are used by the animals as tunnels to push out dirt that is in excess. Probe tunnels with a long object to find the straightest and the longest tunnel.

After locating the major tunnels, its important to dig down holes that reach to the tunnel. Remember to dig holes big enough so that your traps can fit. After doing that, it is that time to set up your traps. They should be set inside the holes. Remember to stabilize your traps so that the animals cannot move them. To mark the locations of the traps, you can consider using several flags. The traps should then be covered using grass or dirt.

After successfully setting the traps, its crucial to remember checking them frequently. If you find some gophers trapped, remove them. You should consider digging holes for their disposal. After the animals have been removed from your traps, set them back again. This procedure should be repeated until the sign of gophers has gone down.

Consider using pincer traps because they are very effective. Set them properly inside tunnels where gophers are likely to feed. One good thing about these traps is that its easy to carry them inside your pockets.

Always remember to monitor your garden or yard. If the gopher menace reoccurs again, be sure to follow these steps. Monitoring is very important because you will be able to prevent the growth of a large population of gopher. Note that, it is easier to monitor small populations compared to large populations.
