A Look At The Different Uses For Emergency Lighting

By Eric Holm

In the time of a disaster or accident having adequate emergency lighting is very important and can literally be the difference between life and death. A lot of people and businesses have this equipment on hand in order to help evacuate buildings, find lost people and light up areas that are not always lit up during rescue operations. It is very important that an individual who enjoys the outdoors bring equipment like this with them during their outings.

Devices like these are no good if stored in places that are hard to get to or if they do not stay charged on a regular basis. Having multiple flashlights within a home is a moot point if stored in areas such as a garage, attic or basement and cannot be located quickly and decisively. In worst case scenarios the location of the lights are completely unknown.

In order to effectively make use of these items a person needs to make sure they are readily available. This means storing the items in easy to reach places such as kitchen drawers or hall closets where they can be grabbed quickly when the power fails. Also when going out and leaving the kids at home it is a good idea to inform the person watching the children where the equipment is stored in case they should need it.

One way to make sure there are lights around in case of a power outage, they should routinely be checked for batteries and make sure they are working. Also having back up batteries will help to keep the lights should the power stay off for a long period of time. As an added precaution shack lights and crank lights that do not require batteries are available for purchase and can be used over and over again creating a light source for the whole family. These models are great because they use friction power to light the unit and only require a shake or crank to power it up.

Whether a family or single person likes traveling in the wilderness having adequate emergency lighting is crucial. Other emergency supplies that are recommended include solar blankets, water and a quality emergency radio and light. Having an emergency light and radio will provide light along with a way of receiving updates from news broadcasts. Backup lights are also a great thing to have and come in a variety of miniature flashlights.
