Advice for Learning German

By Keith Perry

Learning German is a great goal, but if you haven't ever learned a new language before, figuring out the best way to do so can a challenge. Some people find that they learn languages best when they study on their own. Then there are those who find the classroom atmosphere the ideal learning environment. Some find that immersing yourself with others who speak the language, or simply repeating the words and phrases is the right way. There are quite a few ways to learn a foreign language. Sometimes the best way to learn is to attempt different methods. Use the following tips to get your feet off the ground.

A great way to learn German is to find a friend or relative who speaks perfect German. When you learn German from a person who is a native speaker of the language, you will learn everything the right way. Learning from a German speaker who is close to you offers you the benefit of being extremely comfortable in front of them so you won't be afraid to make any language blunders in front of them. Not only that but you will find that it's fun to work with a friend. When you learn German with a friend, that friend will best know how to tailor the lesson plans for you because they'll be familiar with your learning style.

Can you find a way and are you able to afford to completely immerse yourself in German? Some people learn their best by just being thrown into it. One of the best ways to make this happen is to travel to a country where German (or whichever language you want to learn) is the main language and your native language is scarce. This forces you to figure out how to communicate with the people you encounter and it forces you to learn German as it is used in regular life. Not everybody is successful with immersion. Some individuals, on the other hand, discover that it is the only option for them for truly learning how to speak in a language that is not their native tongue.

Is there a local neighborhood where most of the people speak German? Spend time visiting that neighborhood. German is best learned by immersing yourself in the culture, but this will allow you to stay near home in case you get too overwhelmed. Neighborhoods such as these are perfect because the people will speak German the way it would be used in German or wherever else German is spoken. You will find that the German spoken on the street is very different from what you'll learn in any text book. Learning how to speak German in an informal setting will help you feel more relaxed if you do ever visit a German speaking country.

There are tons of things you can do to make learning German an easier venture. Don't let it stress you out. Learning a new language can be one of the hardest things you'll ever attempt! Take your time, work hard and before you know it, you should be able to speak the language fluently! ?
