The National Flag of Zimbabwe

By Brian Vurry

One of many striking historical flags of Africa is in my opinion the national flag of Zimbabwe. I have a friend or two from this part of the world; the use of national colors is just brilliant, if not literally brilliant. Displaying the colors green, yellow, red, black and white, this flag hoists wonderfully from poles of all kinds, especially tall flag poles.

The flag design of the Zimbabwean flag includes seven horizontal stripes as well as white triangular shape element on the hoist side (left) of the banner. The triangle features a star in red and the Zimbabwe Bird in yellow, on top of the star and triangle. Except for the hoist side of the triangle, the 2 other sides have a black border. The bigger remaining part of the flag displays the horizontal stripes in the colors aforementioned.

Over the years, decades and centuries banners and flags have been used as powerful tools to represent individuals, countries and organizations of all kinds. Flags are commonly well designed and respective elements have powerful meaning. The flag of Zimbabwe has a strong use of symbolism as well. The colors for example, and specifically the color red is said to represent the blood that was spilled as a result of wars that were executed in the past.

Zimbabwe is located in the southern part of Africa and land-locked between 2 substantial rivers, the Limpopo and Zambezi. South Africa is borders the republic to the south and Botswana borders the territory to the southwest. Other countries that border the republic are Zambia to the northwest and the country of Mozambique to the east. Interestingly, Zimbabwe's 3 official languages are English, Ndebele and Shona.

The Zimbabwean army is officially called the Zimbabwe National Army or ZNA, and was first organized in 1980, from the then existing elements of the so-called Rhodesian Army. During the army's organization, a number of British Army trainers managed the integration of the guerrilla forces into the new battalion. Like other armies in the world the ZNA also flies its respective flag from dynamic and static flag poles throughout the territory.

Back in the day, the flag of Zimbabwe was designed by Cedric Herbert, a Flight Lieutenant of the then organized Rhodesian Air Force. His design included and includes the so-called "pan-African" colors of green, red, yellow and black. The country has a rich history historical flags. The flag has been used for purposes of display, including the use of flag poles. The use of colors on this African flag (which is available for purchase from all kinds of suppliers throughout the world) is unusually original, if you would ask me.
