Everything you need to know about Container Gardening

By John Bakers

If you are interested in growing plants and flowers but you just don't have the space to grow them, there is an option available. You could easily grow practically anything you like in container gardens. Plus the best advantage to container gardening is that you can use anything as a container. Whether it is an old boot, a helmet or a bucket - it really doesn't matter!

Container Gardens - The Low Cost Option

Another advantage to container gardening is that it is fairly low cost. If you already have a container then all you really need to pay for is the plants. Now the only plants that you should not grow in a container are perennial plants. This is because they do tend to need quite a lot of space and in winter they need to be completely protected against the weather. However, apart from those you can grow virtually any plant including fruit and vegetables, so container gardening is something that can be enjoyed by anybody.

If you are a beginner to container gardening then one particular plant you might like to start with is strawberry plants. They are best grown in hanging baskets. You will notice that the vines of the plant will grow outside the container and the fruit will also grow on the outside too.

There are a number of reasons why people might like to take part in container gardening and one of them is for decorative purposes. If you plan on using plants for decorative purposes then the best ones to choose are ones that grow on vines. Types of petunias can be great for example as they tend to climb outside of their containers. If you grow them against a wall then they will grow out of their containers and down towards the ground. Or if you would prefer to grow decorative vegetables then bean plants are well known for being able to climb trellises and they do look unique too.

If you want to grow vegetables and plants for more than just decoration then carrots are another option open to you. However they will need quite a lot of space as they need room to mature and sprout. If you are struggling to find a decent sized container for your plants then a bucket would be appropriate.

Once they have been planted, usually plants in containers need very little maintenance. All you really have to do is water them and keep them in sunlight. So this makes them ideal for anybody who has very little time to spend on gardening.

Overall container gardening is definitely an option for those who live in apartments and who do not have much time for ordinary gardening. It doesn't matter which type of plants you choose, just as long as you stay away from perennial plants.
