What Is The Epitome Of Successful Decorating?

By Niles Watkins

An important thing to remember in decorating a room is to create balance. You can have all the up-to-date designs, luxurious materials and items collectors will die for, but if the room looks clumsy, decorating defeats the purpose of improving the room. Knowing when something is too much and not overdoing the decors is a vital design guideline to live by. Like they say to those on a diet, moderation is key. Starvation is bad but so is over-eating.

Creating a balanced look in the room starts with deciding on a theme. Mixing sleek contemporary furnishings made of glass and metal with antiques look odd. It's a sophisticated stockroom but nevertheless, still a stockroom. You should have a theme to work your elements around. Additionally, having a theme will make decorating easier. You'll know what items to have and which goes with a certain material. If you're thinking of a country home theme, then use wood materials, floral prints, bright colors and representations of nature such as flowers, plants and tree branches. Don't add modern pieces of stainless steel or use a tile flooring. It looks totally imbalanced it's creepy.

A continuous flow when looking at the room signifies a well-coordinated space. The furnishings suit and complement each other. This is largely due to the sizes of the objects. Bulky furniture stacked up together blocks the view of an airy room. A too small item paired with a too big piece looks off. Size is important especially if you are using various sizes for your home decorations.

Opposite colors look just as well as tone on tone. This is just tricky because you need to be more careful which contrasting colors you'll use and ensure that they actually work well together. Focus on a highlight and make that as the focal point of the room. Choose a space, preferably in the center of the room, to place that highlight. It can be a black and red Oriental rug in the middle of a neutral-colored room. It can also be a round, bright-colored rug of yellow and lime green placed under a painting of the ocean. The contrasting shades should catch your eye...in a good way, of course. Positioning too many opposite elements throughout the room can have a confusing, chaotic effect.

One piece can often be all that is needed to balance the rhythm in a room because it can help unite all of the objects in that room and still provide a bit of contrast. Making the right choice for an area rug may provide this solution because an area rug could not only fill out the space in a room but help the color scheme work. The area rug could help balance the space between objects because it can give the eye a line to follow when tracing the outside of the room. In addition, an area rug could form a marriage between contrasting colors of a room and help make the space look more attractive.

Finding this balance is what will ultimately make the room successful. If you can make people feel comfortable and at home in the space which you design, you will have done a successful job. Anyone can get used to a space that they spend a great deal of time in, but presenting a design that no one needs to "get used to" will be the mark of true success with the way that you end up decorating the room.
