Fluorescent High Bay : Lighting For Your Commercial Optical Requirements

By Max Kinsler

What essentially is fluorescent high bay lighting? Well it's lighting used commercially in factories or warehouses, and is also used to illuminate large areas like gymnasiums, churches, clubs and places where many people congregate or work. These fixtures normally would hang from high ceilings. They come in types like metal halide, high pressure sodium or the fluorescent lamp.

The fluorescents are extremely versatile in use for workers who sit at an assembly line. They duplicate natural light really well and can illuminate a wide area at once. For this reason many owners opt for this type of fixture as productivity is not halted by poor lighting.

Most new factories are being erected to these specifications and many older factories are changing to high bay fluorescent lighting. It is very cost saving for companies relying on donations like non profit organizations and churches. These fixtures are also available with ballasts, which are devices that regulate light when it should be discharged at a certain time of day or night. This is a huge help because electricity bills can be slashed by forty percent per month.

If you do not have a heavy duty industrial manufacturing plant, then you can also go for a more tailored style to render lighting for general tasks by officer workers and such. Or should you be building an outdoor pavilion then you can definitely benefit by installing a high pressure sodium lighting system. This lights will give you excellent illumination at night for sports events or even big outdoor entertainment events as well.

Having said that, let us take a quick look at bay lights in general:

High Pressure Sodium fixtures - these are preferred by commercial warehouses. They tend to offer a long lamp life which is said to be approximately 25,000 hours. They do however tend to give a yellow huge which is annoying to some people. But where coloring is not important, these light fixtures are suitable.

Metal Halide - popularly used where you have a lot of assembly lines. These lines need to be illuminated very brightly to assist workers with their job. They tend to be expensive and the life span is about 7,500 hours. Here you would have to replace often.

Fluorescent high bay - these use far less power and light is more effectively or evenly distributed. Their light is less intense and easy on the eyes. These are ideal for lighting big areas of floor space where clear visibility is needed without having glare or shadows.
