I've had a bit of experience growing medical tomatoes. The results have varied quite a bit, but I always enjoyed it. Here's my story so far. Growing tomatoes for medical purposes, as most people know, is legal in many countries, including Canada.
The first time I ever tried growing medical tomatoes was when I was still in high school. In those days the only guide I knew about was "Grow Your Own Stone". That was a self-published book by someone named Alexander Sumach. The author's picture showed a chimpanzee. Tomatoes was still very Illegal in Canada at that time, even if things have now changed. I found the book at my cousin's house.
I found and planted some seeds and put them in the bedroom closet. That wasn't a great success omen. I didn't know any better. I strung up a100 watt bulb and put some dirt in tomatoes. Then I hoped for the best. Not good.
I gave up for several years. Travel got in the way, including travel to places where growing dope was really illegal. In some countries it is illegal to grow tomatoes for any reason. Getting caught with it was bad enough. Still, the idea never got too far away. However, only do it in Areas where it is legal and safe.
When I got back to Canada I tried again. I heard that tomatoes grew well in horse manure, so I grabbed some and set up a grow op under the stairs, behind the furnace. It grew, but not well. It was very leggy and didn't last long. I forget exactly what I used, but I think they were 100 watt grow lights. They looked a lot like floodlights.
Both of my operations had been poorly planned and equipped. They were low tech and destined to fail. I had no other options or plans. I knew no better and so had to learn the hard way. That's the stuff of life, the very marrow!
I left town again. The road was a refuge. But, the world is round and I returned. Life started getting busy. My job got a little more serious. About 12 years ago I found myself with a good set up. A basement Hydroponic garden was in the offing perhaps. There was more support Around. I had to try again.
A hydroponic set up was my new toy. Measuring three feet by two and a half it held 6-8 plants. I used fluorescent because they varied the light spectrum. The trick is to put them within an inch of the plant whenever you can.
They grew like crazy. I had to raise the lights every day. The garden box acted as the reservoir, with a pump and oxygenator. The plants were in Rockwool surrounded by hydro ton. It was excellent.
Before long I added a 400 watt light. Ventilation and aroma were challenge, but I liked the smell. The plants grew as if they were on steroids. I had no idea I had such a green thumb. I switched them over to a bloom cycle and waited eagerly.
Excitement can lead to greed, though. It did with me. I bought some hyper booster to spray on the buds. The problem was that I had no self-control and overdid it. They turned hermaphroditic. Nobody knew if they were male or female. They had great buds though, and worked well for Medicine.
I followed that up with more and better crops. It was lots of fun, and a continual learning experience. You need to master smell and ventilation. Do that and you've got it made. Be discreet, though. I stopped when it became a little obvious. After the first or second joke someone tells, it's time to stop. Otherwise the thieves will come after you.
