How wallpaper became cool again

By Chris Brown

When wallpaper was originally created it was in a slightly different form to what it is today. It was very popular with the wealthy of renaissance Europe but instead they hung colourful patterned tapestries on their walls to add a feature to their room. It was those who weren't wealthy who came up with the wallpaper we use today as they hung colourful paper on their walls as an alternative to the expensive tapestries.

Wallpaper gradually lost track of its flamboyant beginning over the years though and eventually just became a plain wall covering. Less and less people were using wallpaper to add a feature or some colour to their homes but instead they used it because it was what everyone did. To the dismay of future decorators plain wallpapers and chipboard became very popular but recently wallpaper has begun to make a comeback.

As styles changed and people began to get more adventurous with the colours of their home wallpaper made a comeback in a big way. With more styles and colours on offer than ever before people were overwhelmed with choice and could decorate their rooms like in a way different to anyone else.

Interior design and decorating programmes have also helped wallpaper to become cool again as people watch them and immediately want to have a go at decorating their own homes. Nobody wants out of date decorating and these programmes show people what's modern. One feature which many have taken on is the feature wall. This is using very daring wallpaper on one wall to add a feature to a room but at the same time not being too overpowering.

Feature walls are a very modern use of wallpaper and are currently very popular. They have been a big contributing factor to how wallpaper has become cool once again. Another factor is that people can now buy bespoke wallpaper with their own designs on it. This means that people really can have any design they want and a truly unique interior in their home.
