Tile Patterns In Less Than 5 Minutes

By Mike Hartwick

Tile is well known for being one of the best ways to cover a wall or floor. However, if you want the best results you'll need to pick a pattern. Fortunately their is a wide variety of tile patterns to pick from. And that allows everyone an opportunity to find something that works for them.

For someone interested in a simple pattern, the straight lay can be a good choice. And best of all since it isn't complicated it can be installed by beginners. This can save you some cash if you want to do it yourself. As you could guess from the name, with this tile pattern, the tiles are set in a straight line. Just be sure to line each one up so its even with the ones next to it.

Another twist on the straight lay tile pattern is the checkerboard. And yes, it does look just like a chess or checkerboard with black and white squares. It accomplishes this by using alternating solid-colored white and black tiles. Some manufacturers actually offer large tiles with multiple checkered squares on them already so you won't have to do much thinking at all. When this pattern is used with stone tiles it can look very luxurious but less expensive vinyl tiles are always an option too.

The running bond tile pattern is a long time favorite. It may sometimes also be called the brick pattern as it is the most commonly seen in brickwork. The tiles are set so that each one is even with the center of the tile in the row before it just like you'd see when looking at a brick wall. This is option that not only works on the floor but wall as well. In fact it is often used in the kitchen and bathroom to form a back splash.

The herringbone is a more complicated looking choice. This one gets its name because of how much it reminds people of the skeleton of a herring fish and is usually seen on the floor. Another way to go if you want something complex is the Versailles tile pattern and its another common choice for use on on the floor. It uses tiles of multiple sizes to create a look similar to one that is random but really is not. If you are considering either of these, having a professional install them is the best idea.

It's clear to see that there are many tile patterns to choose from. Actually, there are quite a few more than described here. To help make sure your project is a success be sure to always listen to your gut feeling when picking your pattern.
