Important Details About Lawn Aeration

By Joanna Walsh

When it comes to issues of caring for the garden, one of the best experiences is having a lawn that is outstanding. Lawn aeration in Redwood city is the technique whereby gardeners punch numerous holes into soil so that there is entry of important nutrients from sunlight, water and air. These nutrients get to the roots of the grass. The moment the nutrients get to the roots, they become very healthy and strong. Grasses will therefore become beautiful.

Aeration of lawns is beneficial in instances where such lawns are suffering from thatch or they start to look pale. Aerating the soil is done in a number of ways but the easiest involves the use of spike lawn aerator shoes. They are pairs of molds that have many spikes at the bottom and the molds get slipped over the shoes. One then merely needs to walk around the farm as the spikes dig into the ground. This will provide core holes which allow entry of water and air into roots.

The shoes have the advantage of enabling one to go about their gardening as the holes are made. As you walk around the garden, there will be aeration of the grass. About frequency of aeration, this depends on several situations. Some people will need to do it once after several months. If the lawns in question are affected by thatch, they should be aerated more regularly. This enables the right nutrients to access the roots.

It will be important to know the best timing for aerating roots. Grasses which do well in cool conditions such as the tall fescue are supposed to be aerated when they are at their peak. This is usually during the early months of fall. Warm season grasses like Bermuda need to be aerated during late spring or early summer.

There is the option of using professional services and this comes at a cost. Various firms charge differently. Most people however prefer to do it individually. Aerators can be rented or purchased from various stores or rental outlets. There should be advance planning so that they are gotten in advance before the aerating season begins. The machines are big and heavy, so transportation arrangements must be made.

Depending on the condition of the lawn, one or two passes may be just fine. For older lawns, extra passes will be required. This will also be the case in heavy traffic areas. For those that are planning to over-seed, it will be advisable to rake over the aerated lawn until such a time that core holes are a half full before seed application.

After completion of seeding, there is spreading of starter type fertilizer that is rich in phosphorous, potassium and nitrogen. After that, there needs to be raking to break up remaining cores and also to spread soil over the seed. Light watering should then be done. Watering helps in keeping seeds moist until they get to germinate.

Aeration of grass is very essential. It will benefit all forms of lawns. It is important for anyone looking for healthy lawns.
