Smart Use Of Glass In Interior Design

By Henrietta Pym

They say that a Jack of All Trades is a master of none, but something does not necessarily have to be limited in its use just because it is versatile. Glass is a material that can be used in a home in a very wide range of creative ways, fitting well with a variety of different styles and design schemes. Glass designs can also come with a distinct set of advantages. And with the option to be either flashy or inconspicuous, it can be incorporated into almost any design style. This article will go over some of the ways modern homes can use glass to add style and beauty to their design.

Tiling: We will start with the most common glass design. Glass tiles have gained popularity in kitchens and bathrooms in recent years, and they deserve the attention they have been getting. Glass tiles are not only easy to install and maintain, they are also durable and naturally waterproof. Numerous colors, patterns and textures are available, ready to be incorporated into your design.

Railings: You would commonly find glass and metal railings on the staircases and upper levels of office buildings. Those designs do not have to be limited to places of business, however, and smart use of glass can be add a unique flair to the upper levels of your home. Metal and glass can be a little too cold for some people's taste, though. In those cases, they may instead choose to use colored plastic or finished wood for the framing.

Furniture: Many homes have glass table tops in the eating areas, living room and patio. Even if the table itself is not made of glass, you might opt to use a glass table top over the surface to protect the finish.

Glass Doors: Sliding glass patio doors and frosted shower enclosures are not uncommon in contemporary homes, but you are less likely to find glass doors in the interior doorways. They lend a unique, sophisticated appearance. They can be a simple frosted pane in a wooden or metal frame, or, for something really unique, they can be a single rectangular pane hanging from a sliding track above the doorway. Some sort of texture or pattern is usually applied to make sure the door is not completely transparent. Doors like these can really take an ultra-modern design scheme to the next level.

Art Pieces: Not every single element of a home is designed primarily for function. We have art in our homes simply because it looks good or has some meaning. Glass fulfills this purpose just as well as functional purposes. You can use vessels or containers made with glass blowing, a technique refined over more than 20 centuries, to add artistic flair and style to any room. If you need something to adorn the walls with, mosaics, colored panes and printed glass can be used to great effect.

If used properly, glass designs can affordable, long-lasting and eco-friendly. Have you examined some of the options available and thought about how you can use glass in your home?
