Top emergency supplies for disaster survival

When it comes to an emergency situation, preparation is key. There's nothing worse than not having the right emergency supplies available. You will put you and your family at risk; missing one or two key items can make a crucial difference. We've put together a list of essential items that should be part of any survival kit.

Survival Backpack: Remember that natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes might mean that you will need to leave your home. This is why you need the correct survival backpack for your emergency supplies. It should capable of enduring harsh weather conditions, as well as having enough space for the basic items needed for survival.

Food: You will need many different foodstuffs available. Canned items are good to have in your home, but you should definitely also have higher nutrition snack foods that you could easily carry.

Water: Include enough water to keep you going for a few days. In case your emergency situation lasts longer than a few days, you should also have a water purification kit. Collapsible, BPA free containers are also a must.

Cellphone and Personal Locator System: Today's mobile devices are excellent as they are able serve multiple purposes. Built-in GPS systems are a fantastic feature you need to have on yours. The Personal Locator Beacon will guarantee that emergency crews can locate you if you are in an out of the way spot.

Specialized Emergency First Aid Kit: Don't purchase the popular 'all-in-one' emergency first aid kit. These won't have everything required and, sometimes the contents are of a lesser quality than if you decided to find them individually. Everyone is different, therefore you will need to focus on your own personal circumstances. If you take health professional prescribed medicines, you should definitely have plenty in supply.

Outfits: Your emergency supplies must be ready for most weather situations. Your clothes should be light, quick drying and comfortable to wear. Be ready for wet, frosty, dry and warm conditions. You never know what the weather will throw at you.

Whistle and Compass: If you're lost or need help, these items are essential. Don't go cheap. Go to a specialist survival store to get high quality items that will be dependable in an emergency.

Map: Have a detailed map of the area. You must know the most trusted walking and driving paths.

Emergency Poncho and Blanket: Wet and cold is often a severe risk and in case you find that your clothing is inappropriate both of these items can end up saving your life. They are generally light, inexpensive and compact, so there is no reason to not add them to your checklist.

Light and Flames: You will want light and flames, so have one or more method accessible for each. Several lights, matches, backup power packs and rainproof matches are an excellent start.

Cash: You never know when it will come in handy. $100 should be enough for most situations. Keep your cash limited to small denominations. Having two $50 bills is not a good idea.
