Options For A Fantastic Evergreen Boundary Hedge

By Kenny Lacey

When choosing a plant for your boundary, your best option may well be to use an evergreen species which will provide excellent year round cover.

They cost slightly more than other options but they are always worth it.

There are a number of advantages to having evergreen shrubs for your hedge. They are able to protect your home and outside areas from pollution and reduce the impact of noise, disguise and hide unattractive features and give additional privacy where it is required.

There are a vast selection of great evergreen plants to choose from, so it is easy to find a selection of plants that you love to suit your project. For optimum interest you should combine a few different types together.

Both Yew and Laurel are popular choices to go for.

Yew is possibly the most classic choice for the majority of people in the United Kingdom. This dark green shrub has additional interest during the autumn when it produces red berries. Yew is a hardy evergreen that is reasonably easy to grow in any soil type with fairly good drainage. You can expect growth of up to 30 centimeters every year.

Laurel has large glossy leaves. It is extremely hardy and produces vigorous growth of around 30 to 60 centimetres a year. In addition to its lovely autumn berries, it also produces pretty flowers in spring. You can grow Laurel successfully practically anywhere you like. An annual trim every spring is the most effective way to keep Yew and Laurel in great shape.

Bamboo or Escallonia would provide a very different result. Bamboo (Phyllostachys) is a fantastic option for a variety of projects and tends to work particularly well in modern garden design. Bamboo grows rapidly , therefore for many projects it is a very popular option. A boundary created from Bamboo will give you a uniquelook. Be careful because a few varieties of Bamboo are invasive. Bamboo is available in a variety of different colours.

For a great burst of colour you may like Escallonia which is covered in red flowers from June through to October. Escallonia will grow fairly rapidly too, at up to 45 centimeters per year.
