Specialized Proper Training For Security Guards Is Important

By Claude Peter Stinson

Employing well trained security guards ensures that the duties assigned to them are carried out in a professional and efficient manner. Whether they are armed guards or not, many aspects of their position will require that they have training in different areas. Retail stores, construction sites and offices or apartment buildings, as well as a host of other sites, can benefit from hiring well prepared security personnel.

When training these personnel, it is important to stress that they act in a professional manner. They must be able to deal tactfully and effectively with the public. Being able to communicate well with emergency personnel such as police is a must.

A good working knowledge of the local law is a definite asset. Guards may be required to detain people, and being familiar with the proper procedures for this can deter future legal problems for the business that employs them as well as the site they may be contracted to. Firearms, if necessary to the job require training and permits to carry them. Other items like batons and pepper sprays are regulated in places as well, and may require specialized education.

The security personnel should always be very familiar with the area they are looking after. Whether the guard will be patrolling on foot or via a video surveillance system, knowing the site inside and out help them deal effectively with issues and problems should they arise. They may also need to guide responders throughout the area in an emergency, or divert people and traffic, and being familiar with the area is vital.

Being able to record details for reports and the descriptions of possible suspects in any situations requires a guard to have excellent skills in communication. Computer skills can be required in order to document the reports. Good taking of notes also helps them to recall details they may otherwise overlook, and can keep information clear for later use.

Some security guards need to have training in CPR and first aid procedures so they are able to help in an emergency, or at least attend to the situation until responders arrive. Having medical knowledge can help when describing situations over the phone to dispatchers.

Security guards can be vital to the safety of many businesses and buildings. The prevention and deterrence of crime saves money, and a well maintained, and up to date staff of professional security officers can provide peace of mind and protection to any situation.
