Roof Repair

By Scott Rodgers

Roofs are very important part of our house so it becomes our duty to take good care of them. They require regular inspections so that they can stay for long.

Roof leaks can cause great problems in a home. But, many homeowners still allow their roof leak to continue causing extensive damage to the roof, ceiling, as well as creating health hazards. While a leaking roof is very damaging, most of them can be easily repaired.

Identifying the source of roof leak is the first step in repairing it. They usually occur frequently at places like skylights, chimneys, flashlights etc.

The main reason for roof leaks can be worn out or missing shingles on the roof, poorly sealed vents, a low spot on the roof where water collects or it can be due to debris like leaves and branches where water collects. It is important to look for leaks during the day when the light is good.

After detecting the leak location, place a bucket to collect the water for the time being. Take a ladder and look at the roof in that area and you would be easily able to make out the reason behind dripping water. You can see a broken shingle or loose flashing or some debris material stuck there.

If there is debris on the roof such as leaves or ice that is stuck in a low spot melting, by cleaning away this debris, you can usually stop the leak. However, please note, this is only a quick fix, there is still usually damage to the roof that should be fixed so that another leak does not happen.

If you see a missing or a broken shingle on the roof, the process of repairing it is quite simple. Replacing the worn out or damaged shingles should be enough to patch the leak and prevent it from coming back. One should make sure not to delay the process of replacing the damaged shingle as it can cause great problems later on.

If you are not comfortable enough with the roof repairing, you can always go in for a professional roofer. Also, make sure that you do not try fixing your roof in a thunderstorm.
