My Favorite Things - A Guide To Decorating Girls Rooms

By Dillan Foster

If you and your daughter are planning her room makeover, we've met at the right time. I will be enumerating the best choices for a decorating theme for girls' bedroom. You and your girl might find one that suits her personality and interest.

Girls are particularly fussy about their rooms. Color is of the utmost importance. Girls understand at an early age that color affects their feelings. Girls are also more prone to hosting sleepovers so it is important that their room is a positive reflection to other girls. Light hues in pink, purple and green are especially popular with girls. The trend this year is to add white to the classic colors. The themes for girl rooms tend to be more romanticized and more connected to nature.

A popular look draws inspiration from the ocean. Walls are painted watery blues to mimic the ocean, neutral or sand-colored flooring with clouds on the ceiling. Accessories such as seashells, bottles of sand, paintings, etc are abundant. A terrific addition would be an alarm clock that wakes her up to the sounds of the waves crashing onto shore or the sound of seagulls.

Another popular theme among girls is romantic nighttime, with stars, wisps of thin clouds and the moon on a black sky.

Working this in the room takes only a little imagination. We see this almost every night so you only need to copy. The ceiling can be painted a midnight blue instead of black (unless your girl is a rock star at heart), paint a yellow-streaked moon and add glittering stars.

Flowers are a big hit among girls (and women!). Floral wallpaper is a nice backdrop and flower artworks are pretty decors. Flower theme can also be shown in bed sheets, curtain, pillow covers and comforter. If the wall is painted, choose a bright color or the color of her favorite flower. Painting pictures of flowers too with butterflies and bees will create a bountiful garden in your girl's room. With the real flowers as decorative items, the feeling will seem so real!

A homely theme welcomed by girls is the cottage-inspired room. There is the use of wood materials here and lots of light, pastel colors. Buying a wooden chair and table can be affordable by purchasing them at a thrift shop or a flea market.

To complete the look, area rugs come to the rescue. An ocean theme can be highlighted by a rug in green or blue color. A moonlight or starlight theme can be adorned with an area rug with a similar design. There are rugs in bright colors and printed floral designs for a nature/flower theme and country home inspired look.

Decorating can be a joint project between you and your daughter, sister, cousin or niece. She will appreciate the outcome so much more if she experiences firsthand the effort that goes with decorating. In addition, her room will feel more personal because she was part of transforming it into her own dream wonderland - in the middle of a lush forest, a garden, a quiet night full of stars, a country home or whatever she wishes her room to be. Allow her to choose her own decorations and watch as her face glows with excitement as her room slowly changes right before her eyes.
