Safe And Secure: Three Ways To Protect Your Home

By Jerry Clark

No matter where you live, there is always a risk crime. There are plenty of options available to warn you when an intruder is on the premises, but the first step in home security is to discourage the thief from approaching the house in the first place. Burglars are opportunists who are most likely to go after homes that look like easy targets. A would-be thief is much more likely to move on if they see that your home is well defended. So what are some ways to can keep your home visibly protected?

Security System: Many modern homeowners wisely opt to install some kind of home security system. There are many recognizable brands out there, and it can be displayed noticeably on the outside your home with a sign or sticker that says something like "Protected by So-and-So". There are both wired and wireless setups, and they each have their own merits. Wired systems are more of a hassle to install, but don't come with concerns like battery life that wireless systems may include.

Using them is usually a very straightforward process. You just arm or disarm the system by punching in a code. Most will sound an alarm when a window or door is opened or breached while the system is active.

Lighting: Keeping the outside of your home lit is not only important for the safety of yourself and visitors, but it can also be an effective method of deterring burglars. Most exterior lights activate when they detect motion. Burglars are most likely to go for the darker, more hidden areas around your home, such as upper-level windows that can only accessed with a ladder. Having a lighting system that brightens up these areas will leave the potential thief visible to neighbors if he tries anything funny. Someone on a ladder trying to pry open a window at 2:00 am is a suspicious enough sight for most neighbors to get involved.

Release the Hounds: There's no arguing that a home with large, trained dog is more intimidating than one without. Guard dogs have been used for ages, and they're still effective today to call out or defend against invaders.

This isn't an option for some people, since they may have allergies or are unable to care for the dog. But if you're able to take the responsibility, a guard dog can be on the best security systems out there. Be sure to make sure it has access to food, water and a yard (both to poop and have access to the backyard, which is a popular target for thieves) while you're away. Be sure to research the best breed for your situation, and be sure to check the source, as less reputable sources might offer sickly or overly-vicious dogs.

The best fights are the ones we avoid. Most burglars prey on the weak, so keeping your home security visibly strong will ensure that most would-be thieves with any sense will keep on walking.
