Things To Consider When Hiring A Lawn Mowing Service

By Michelle Howe

There are several things you need to know when you are considering hiring a lawn mowing service. You should check the references of the business you are hiring to care for your lawn. Check with the local chapter of the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any outstanding complaints against the company. Always double check the estimated price quoted by the firm. Most yard care firms are reputable and very responsible but you have to watch out for those that are not.

Double check the references of anyone coming to your home. Local Chambers of Commerce and other local businesses can verify the provider's reputation within the business community. They can provide a history of all businesses registered with them. Former customers and people listed on resumes are also helpful when investigating providers for any previous problems.

Always confirm the final cost quoted by the company. Some companies will quote one price at the beginning of negotiations but will raise the price as negotiations continue. They will try to add services and fees as they go. Always nail down the final price before hiring the business. The best way to do that is get a written contract that states the services to provided and the fees to be paid.

When considering hiring an third party provider to do the work for you, always consider the cost of performing the work yourself. Calculate how much your time is really worth, the cost of fuel and equipment maintenance then compare that to the price the business is asking. Most times, customers will find the provider's price is much better than the cost of doing it themselves.

You can contact your local BBB chapter to find out if the provider has a history of billing complaints. Some providers charge an hourly rate while other charge a flat fee. Those with hourly rates may work slower than needed and run up the bill. Those with flat fees may fly through the work leaving your with poor quality just so they can get to the next customer. Always check with the BBB for similar billing complaints.

The BBB can also tell you how reliable the company is. If the company has a history of poor quality work or not even doing the work it was contracted to do then the BBB should have that on file. Unsatisfied customers are able to file complaints against companies that are not members of the BBB. While the BBB might not be able to help solve those complaints, they do track them and will provide that history when asked.

Always meet the person that is coming to your house before signing a contract. Meet face-to-face and see if the two of you get along. If the person is rude or unprofessional, it might be a clue to keep looking. When meeting with a new business or service provider, always meet in public. Never ask them to your home until you have gotten to know them.

It is a good idea to check the quality and verify the reputation of any lawn mowing service provider before signing a contract. Double check the price and make sure the contract lists the exact services that you are paying for. Always check out the provider before making a hiring decision.
