Why You Might Need Your Kitchen Remodeling

By Wayne Hemrick

Kitchens are very personal spaces, and for the enthusiastic cook, they must be made-to-measure. It is a place where they need to be comfortable, everything in its place and a place for everything. This is why, when you move into a new home you may have to consider some kitchen remodeling.

When you have found out about the options available to you as far as the design goes, you will have to draw a plan. This is where you must consider priorities, it must be functional, but you probably also want it to look good. Take some ideas from furniture stores or magazines, even discuss it with your friends and neighbors, who might even know a designer who can help you.

You will also have to decide whether you are going to keep the appliances that you have, or purchase new ones that can be specially customized, and built-in, to your new kitchen. If you are buying new ones you must consider their size, durability, and quality. These decisions will also be affected by your budget.

When you start to to do your planning, you will have to make certain decisions, based on your budget and your abilities. You could go with one of the kitchen design specialists, who will help you with your design, based on the modules they have available. This would be quite an easy solution, and you would end up with a beautiful fitted workspace, the problem is that it might not be exactly what you want. However, you can do everything yourself from scratch, building cupboards and work surfaces, equipment installation, and the plumbing.

The space you have available is also a factor you have to bear in mind. The positioning of the electric sockets, plumbing and entrance points are things that you might not want to alter in your new design, as this will just add to the expense. It is factors like these that might determine the shape that you need to work with, as there is no point aiming for a U-shaped design if that is only going to block the doorway, or limit the available light.

As far as functionality is concerned there are three areas that must be planned around, namely the cooker, the sink, and the refrigerator. These should all be easy to reach whilst cooking. If your sink is in easy view of your reception area, it might be worth planning to have it in a location that it cannot be seen by visitors.

Another set of three areas that you must plan to be ergonomically functional are the food storage, food preparation, and a clean areas. Kitchens can be very dangerous places so you do not want to be moving about too much, especially if you have hot pans on the stove. You should also plan where you are going to store necessary utensils. You do not want to have heavy pans stored above waist height or they may fall and cause damage. Sharp knives and other dangerous implements should also be secured safely away, but clearly visible when you are looking for something.

When you decide to do some kitchen remodeling, consider yourself and your family, and how they will be using the area. Do not get overly concerned about the current trends. The area you design must be one that is safe and comfortable to work in.
