The Classic and New Styles of Plantation Blinds

By John Stabler

Plantation blinds are a modern and attractive alternative to traditional window blinds and shades. Primarily made of wood panels, these blinds are attached to a frame, and are perfect for use without additional window coverings. They are readily available in both home and window stores, and can be purchased in a variety of materials, from wood grains and painted colors to blinds made of fabric

Wood has a natural color that makes it perfect to use in rooms that already have wood on the panels, doors, or windows. There are many different wood stains available, so it is fairly easy to match your blinds with the shade of your room panels. You will need to consider the style of window the blinds will be used for because they are not made for every design. Although a set of blinds may look attractive with one room, it may look completely out of place in another room.

One of the biggest advantages over standard window blinds, however, is that these blinds can be operated without the use of a hanging cord. For homes with small children, this can be a safer alternative for window coverings. The operation of plantation blinds is most often done with a lever that allows the panels to be moved.

You will see some variations to the classic design of this shutter that has the slats made as one panel rather than two and uses a cord to angle them with. Some of these new designs are made using PVC material, which is a synthetic plastic. The slats may be molded to resemble the look of real wood and are much easier to care for than real wood products are.

Plantation blinds are an attractive update when it comes to window coverings, offering new, modern looks over traditional window blinds. Made of panels attached to a frame, these blinds allow for light to be adjusted and directed into a room, which can prevent damage caused by sunlight to both furniture and carpeting. As these are operated by a lever, they are safe to use in homes with small children. While wood is the most popular material for plantation blinds, an inexpensive alternative is faux wood, a vinyl product that can be made to look like real wood. Plantation blinds are available in most home and window stores, though prices will vary according to size and material.
