Big Rooms Can be Snug - Decorating Tips For Large Rooms

By Harry Johnson

Many homes these days are made with larger spacious rooms and very high ceilings and of course wooden floors. They are great living spaces since you have a large space to design with many different ideas.

People, well most of us anyway want a room that feels cozy. There are ways to make the room seem more cozy, by just using a few decorating tips. Painting the walls a dark shade will help to make the room seem a bit smaller. With a dark color the room seems to warm up a bit more.

Lighter colors reflect light and make spaces seem bigger, so using earth tone colors or taupe will make your bigger space seem smaller and then more cozy. If the ceilings are really high and you would like them to appear lower, paint the ceiling with the darker color. Less lighting in the room will make it feel smaller because it is darker.

Large sized plants and large sized accessories will help to bring your room in and make it cozier. If you use smaller sizes you will have a cluttered effect.

Or try using that furniture that is oversized. A group setting will work to make the room appear a bit smaller too. Set off a separate area of the room for reading or talking, and the other area for something else.

With these little areas made up in the room, you will now need a way to set them apart, but also bring them together. Adding an area rug will be the right decision here. There will be warmth added, and still be a way to connect the areas. Choose rugs that have basically the same shape or design to it doing this will help the room to be pulled together and appear even cozier.

When you go to put small area rugs in a large room you need to make sure that they flow together, and now try to hold your attention in each separate location. With the right size and design you can make your room warm. For example if you have a room that is 12 by 24 feet, put in two rugs if you have two areas that are an 8 by 10 foot rug.

When picking out the area rugs for your large room you have a few options. You can purchase similar carpets and place them in the groupings or you can do two different designs but make sure the colors are a bit similar so it doesn't clash.

If your area rugs are exactly the same or just too similar, you will lose the allure of your groupings. The ultimate choice would be a large area rug with a border design and the smaller with an overall all design that carries the same colors but in an inverse design. Once you have placed your rugs, you can sit back and enjoy your new cozy atmosphere.
