Timeless Decorative Pieces

By Jolie Peterson

Ah, the power of trends. Who would have thought Britney Spears would be a tabloid star instead of the superstar performer she was so famous for. Well good thing she has purportedly made a huge comeback (I actually like her new song). How about New Kids On The Block? Where in heaven's name are they now? They were such heartthrobs and mega popular singers with gazillions of screaming female fans (I'm guilty!). And whatever happened to the King of Pop? What's his name again? My analogy here is the coming and going of trends, fads, what's in, the hot stuff, etc. and that such popularity status is not only limited to celebrities. Fashion, vacation get-away, even value meals and home decorations do suffer from the vicissitudes of the changing trends of our times. Therefore, in choosing your home decors, go with pieces that will, first, never go out of style (like the star quality of Robert DeNiro), only get better with time (Brad Pitt...swoon!) or will stand the test of time with a classic factor lasting than any of us will live (think Audrey Hepburn). Decors that interior design theories and professionals can't and won't live without.

In improving your flooring, it's not so much about the flooring material that seals the deal. It's the floor accessories, best of which are area rugs. Investing in these classic pieces is ensuring your home will always look good no matter what your home's theme or color is or how often you change them. Complementing your home with suitable rugs with the right colors, patterns, sizes, shapes and fabrics will give an ageless look to your house. Rugs have been around for centuries and they will surely stick around for more to come. For all you know, your area rugs can be heirlooms down to your great-great grandchildren, so take care of them well!

One material that interior designers and experienced home decorators rave about is wood. This is one timeless decorative material. There are many ways to use wood in your home. It can be a centerpiece as in an oak dining set or an accent such as a small side table. Any way you incorporate wood into your interiors will certainly give a classic look to your place.

You can consider putting a bench as an alternative to a sofa or couch. As an added furnishing is an option. A bench can add beauty to your other chairs and can give your room a creative twist.

Another great decoration that will never go out of style is mirrors. Hanging a mirror with an antique frame or one with elaborate details on an otherwise plain wall will instantly boost the room's appeal. A mirror can even be an art piece in replacement of an expensive painting or big portrait. Moreover, a mirror can make any space look bigger and more spacious.

Lastly, vintage or traditional fabrics go well with any period. You can be using your grandmother's seat covers and they can still look good with your other decors. Putting fabrics can be as simple as a covering, a drape or a mere accent to enhance a decorative item. Vintage prints look nice as pillow covers, seat cushions or as a wall hanging. Fabrics, being a cloth material give certain femininity to a room. Relaxing and feeling comforted after a long day will never be far from becoming a reality.
