How to Make a Hand Braided Rug

Rugs have been used for many centuries to accent a room or provide a place for a pet to call home, or even to relieve the stress that furniture can put on carpet or bare flooring. Making your own rug is not only rewarding because it is something you make with your own hands, but it is rewarding because it can dress up just about any room and also, provided you follow instructions and your craftsmanship is impeccable, can be passed down to other generations as well as making a great gift.

The first thing you will need to do is take a trip to the fabric store to choose the colors of fabric and style that you want. You will need to choose a very sturdy fabric because remember, this is an area rug or a rug that might have a lot of traffic on it and you do not want it to fall apart in a year. Fabrics that are made of strong material such as denim or very strong cotton are both good choices. Keep the dcor of the room in mind too. You do not want to make a purple and pink rug for a room that has primarily neutral colors in it so stick with the color of the room, but you can be creative in design.

The next thing you will want to do is make sure that you purchase enough material to create the size of rug you want. Most braided rugs are typically either 2x3 Ft. or 3x5 ft. and you can shape them either oval or round depending on your needs. Obviously, there are rugs that are quite a bit larger than this, but for making your first rug, I recommend choosing one just this size to start out with so that you can get a feel for what it will take to create a braided area rug much larger. So with that said, you will need to purchase enough material to cut strips of fabric at least twice that amount because you will be braiding and coiling this rug, it is better to have too much than not enough.

When you have your material ready to go, you will want to cut 3 strips of each fabric into long strips that are approximately 3 inches wide. If you are going for the alternating color look, then make sure that you have the colors in a row the way you want them to appear in the coil. For example, if you are doing a red, white and blue rug, it is best to put the stripes in a red, white and blue order instead of red, blue and white. You will achieve a more flow-like look by doing this.

Next, you will want to sew the ends of each strand together at one end and you can refer to that end as the top of your braid and then once you have sewn them together, you can start braiding until you reach the end. Once you reach the end, you will want to sew that end together to complete the braid.

The final step is going to be coiling and sewing the coil to finish the area rug. You will coil the braid just like a snake would coil and make sure that you start from one end of the braid and place the color you want visible in the center of the rug up.

You will need to hand stitch the inside of the coil with nylon thread because this will be the strongest holding thread. Each time you coil the braid around to the spot where you made your first hand stitch, you will want to make another hand stitch in the same spot for each coil around.

When you reach the end of your coil, you will tuck in the ends between the folds of the previous coils and sew that down firmly. Now you are ready to check the rug for any frays or loose threads and trim them off or sew them down.

You project is complete and you now have a new accent piece to place in any room you choose!

Interestingly enough, stress can actually be quantified. The Holmes-Rahe Social Readjustment Scale assigns point values to the various stressors we can experience in life. For example, the most stressful event we can encounter is the death of a spouse, which ranks a 100 on the scale. That's followed by divorce (73), marital separation (65), jail term (63), death of a close family member (63), and personal injury or illness (53). Even happy events, such as marriage, can rank high on the stress scale.

Most of us do not go through life measuring our stress level. However, referring to the scale can be quite instructive. For instance, after consulting the scale, you might decide to delay a major decision such as the purchase of a new home until you've successfully battled the stress from your divorce. Or you may decide to wait before taking a new job until you've dealt with the stress from your wedding. This self-awareness can enable you to reduce your stress level and to maintain your equilibrium amidst great life struggles.

You can write a list of stress causing events on a list and paste it on a place where everyone in the family can see it. Now, you'll have a frequent reminder of life's struggles and how every family faces the same battles. It may prove to be a consolation in times of great pain and suffering.

Another important thing to do is to verbalize your feelings about a stressful event. Talk to your mate, your parents, a friend, or your pastor. If you feel as if there's simply no one to confide in, ask your family physician for a referral for a good therapist. Talking about your feelings is an important part of the healing process, and will enable you to deal with the stress much more efficiently.

Another way to understand the stress you're facing is to write it down. Use a diary and write down your deepest feelings. It can be a calming exercise and can be used to solve problems as well. Dealing with stress can take many forms. Reorganizing your personal files, taking a warm bath, by doing something to relax your nerves, you'll realize that setbacks are something that's temporary while life goes on.

Now that you're acquainted with the stress scale, why not use a pro-active technique? Try to prepare for disasters ahead of time. If counseling doesn't work, mentally prepare for the day you may divorce and if your mom is having a serious illness, strengthen yourself and do things that will make her happy before she leaves this world. It's not easy to think of such troubling thoughts but it can help you anticipate life's ups and downs.

Another important strategy is to simply "take it slow." Don't hurry when making major life decisions, particularly when you are faced with a crisis. Recognize that most things in life do not require instantaneous decisions. You have the luxury of time, so use it to your full advantage. In the end, you'll be happy that you've taken the time to think things through, rather than making rash decisions. If you're in a "calm mode," you'll also be better able to handle the stress of difficult situations.

How To Make A Fountain From Three Garden Pots

Even though the idea of garden fountains being made from pots is not new, I happened upon a method of building one that I hadn't seen before. I think this fountain would make a wonderful addition to any garden and its so easy to build that anyone can do it. The first thing you need to do is choose the appropriate pots. One will be used as the basin to catch the water coming down. The next is a base and then the largest pot is used for the main fountain. When you are choosing the shape for this pot, keep in mind that the function is just as important as how it looks. A slightly tapered pot that is smooth will be very quiet as the water tends to cling on to the sides of the pot as it falls. Pots having ridges or rings will cause the water to splash into the basin causing more sound.

You start with a large sized terracotta or stone bowl as your garden pot foundation. This will be the basin pot where the overflowing water will fall. Drill a hole out of the bottom center of the bowl if there isn't one already. Now take the cord from your pump and run it through the hole. For larger holes, cover with duct tape and fill with a car body filler. Smaller holes can be filled in with silicon. When that has dried, coat the inside with a water sealant. Now you should be ready to place the basin in your desired location. Although not crucial, try to make the basin as level as possible.

The pump is housed inside the base pot that is turned upside down. The diameter of the base should match the diameter of the main large fountain pot. Cut out three or four notches around the top rim of the pot. Its easier to do this if you soak the pot in water overnight. The purpose of the notches is to let water pass in to the base to the pump.

Take a length of tubing a little longer than the height of the main fountain pot and attach it to the pump. Feed the base pot down through the hole in its bottom and seal the gap between the tubing and the hole with silicon. The whole set up should be your basin with an upside down pot sitting in the middle with a tube sticking out from the pump inside it.

Now things should start taking shape. Take the fountain pot and test fit it down over the tube by placing it on top of the base pot. Don't glue it down yet. If it looks good (with the pipe sticking out past the top of the pot) you can take it back off and run a couple of thick beads of silicon around the top of the base pot. The bead around the outside diameter helps hold the two pots together and the bead on the inside closer to the hole will keep water from running in between the pots.

When it is all dry, test it by filling it with water. Adjust the height of the tubing to get the desired effect of the water bubbling up. Finish it off by filling the bottom basin pot with rocks. Enjoy your beautiful fountain!
