The Magic Of Everlasting Roses

By Peter Thomas

We all like roses, but what can we do if we are allergic to them, or if they are just too expensive? There is an option of having gorgeous roses in your home without breaking the bank - "replica roses," these silk roses are just as beautiful as fresh ones, except that they're even better in many ways. They last indefinately, they won't cause allergies, they don't need to be watered, and you can't kill them.

How can you use replica roses? Replica roses can be used anywhere you'd use fresh roses. Give them to loved ones for anniversary presents or birthdays, say, "I'm thinking of you," to friends or family with a single rose, or present a bouquet of silk roses to a sick friend in the hospital and cheer him or her up.

Advantages of artificial or replica roses as compared to "real" ones Replica roses have other advantages, too. Because hospitals are increasingly asking visitors not to bring in fresh flowers or live plants, fake roses can provide this type of gift to raise spirits without breaking the rules. And lest you think this "no live flowers" rule is simply frivolous, think again. In fact, fresh flowers can bring in bacteria, too, which can be dangerous to patients in the hospital. Therefore, many hospitals have simply outlawed fresh or live flowers or plants. That can be depressing, even if it's for patients' own good! Silk or artificial flowers can provide the same benefits as live flowers can, without any of the drawbacks.

And even though fresh roses are beautiful, let's face it; they're expensive and they die pretty quickly. Of course, there are things you can do to make them last longer, and you can dry them, but silk roses stay beautiful over the long haul, and you only have to buy them once. Better yet, think about it. You or your loved one could buy yourself a new replica rose (or several of them) in a different color every single day or for every special occasion, until you have every color in the rainbow. You can't do that with fresh flowers, since they die very quickly and you have to throw them out.

Finally, a lot of us know we'd love to keep fresh flowers in the house but we simply can't because our crazy pets will eat them. Hilarious as we might think that is, it can be very annoying when we get a bouquet of fresh flowers only to risk losing them because they're going to be eaten, or having to put them aside where they aren't even going to be seen or enjoyed so as to stow them away from the "monsters." However, you won't have that problem with replica roses, since animals won't be attracted to and therefore won't eat them. You can keep them and enjoy them without concern of having them damaged. Indeed, you can have them for years to come.

The short story is that silk roses are very cost effective - and very romantic, beautiful, uplifting, for a many reasons - even as they're a great substitution to fresh cut roses, if you're someone who likes to keep these types of flowers in your home.

Pets vs Floors

By Rio Calven

Do you have pets in your house? Maybe a dog? How about a cat? Pure breed? Whatever they might be, pets are another risk for your floor, especially those that walk and have four feet. Little inconsistencies like these will surely stack up and come back to bite you one day. And although it would be your budget that will be affected in the end, the floor will be the first to receive the full brunt of having your pets and your floor together.

Pets are, arguably, one of the best things in life for most home owners. They give companionship for those lonely days, the provide comfort when you need it, and they can give you what you sometimes think you need.

Pets share the burden of loneliness, and this is a big deal. Pets can be family too, and are treated as such by some home owners.

But they lack the required intelligence to properly take care of your home. Their little actions may or may not lead to the slow destruction of your floor. Training and habit-forming is one way to ensure that your pets and your floor can intermingle without the other suffering for it. Pets can be trained to prevent the ensuing destruction of your floor.

Most than often, cats and dogs would have a good time going in and out of the house for the most part of the day. They might have gone into the front lawn to catch up with the sun, get a good tan from it, smell the scent of freshly cut grass, might have taken a bath, or just for plain fun and for a bit of some uncontested and unhindered rough housing. You could also say that its the only place for them to take care of their "personal" business.

Principles of Organic Vegetable Gardening

By Lucille Green

More farmers are growing interested in organic vegetable gardening because it is cost efficient and they are able to grow almost the same yield of crops. It is not difficult do this at house but first, you have to understand the principles of organic vegetable gardening. First, organic vegetable gardening does not use any manmade fertilizers, nutrients or pesticides. The only thing needed for doing this is sunshine and water, both supplied by nature. We don't produce these ourselves but you have to find the ideal area and provide adequate drainage.

In addition to sunshine and water, plant growth can be promoted by using natural products like compost heap made from waste food, chipped portion of barks, garden compost, moulds from fallen leaves and animal fertilizer. You can mix these all together and then spread this around your garden.

A lot of people are scared off by animal fertilizer but you don't have to scoop this from the toilet because this is sold in stores. Chickens are a good idea, just let them free to walk all all over your garden. Some individuals use dead animals or meat products: you just leave them for a couple of weeks in the bin because maggots will soon come out and this is what you use to help fertilize your garden.

One other helpful creature is the earthworm because it digs deep into the ground and oxygenates the soil bringing various minerals to the surface which also provides better drainage. Earthworms are also known to leave their castings all over the garden, which are rich generators of nitrogen phosphorus and potassium, you could even buy them, if you so desire. Organic vegetable gardening is tough sometimes since you have to deal with undesirable guests - some of these pests include armyworms, crickets, gypsy moth caterpillars, slugs and squash bugs. people usually use fertilizers to destroy these, but with the organic way of doing things, you merely deploy a toad who eats nearly everything. If you have caterpillars or spiders lurking in the garden, get a bird because these are not in the toad's diet.

Most of the time you do not have to invest in the purchase of toads or birds, as they would visit your garden in any case, provided you keep your surroundings are conducive. A tiny birdhouse or a tiny pond are sufficient to welcome your new garden defenders. A couple of other great garden defenders are preying mantis and ladybugs as both of them are very territory conscious and any intruder would soon get killed.

Plants can also be used to safeguard your vegetables. For example, butterflies become history with rosemary sage or thyme and nematode worms never appear where there is a marigold plant. But despite all the flowers and creatures that nature has to offer, crop rotation is seen as the best way to keep the soil productive when you have an organic vegetable garden.

If you planted this kind of vegetable for this season, change it with another and the return to the first after this one is harvested. In reality the rules concerning organic gardening are pretty easy to follow. You just have to be practice it so you can harvest the vegetables you have planted weeks ago.

Creative Ways To Decorate On A Limited Budget

By Lars Watkins

Home decorating may come off as vain and an utter waste of money especially at this time when the economic crisis is at its full swing. Some might argue that money is better saved or spent in more vital matters such as food and bills. Of course that is true. Who can afford to be extravagant at this time when stocks are crashing and companies are struggling? However, decorating your home need not be expensive at all! Contrary to the misconception that home renovation requires bags of money, it can be way cheaper. A little money, some research and lots of ingenuity is all you need. Find out more...

One way is to utilize second-hand furniture and decors. It's easy to fix them and with the proper care can last for a long time. There are tables, chairs, sofas, dining set, cabinets, etc. found in garage sales, flea markets and other second-hand stores. Artworks, rugs, curtains and other smaller items are plenty too. Buying recycled furniture is also a good idea. You'll be surprised how so many of other people's trash can be another's treasure. To make second-hand things look better and suit your own furnishings, you can repaint and cover them in cushions, slip covers or upholstery. Hand-me-downs can also be sanded and primed. Some refreshing and cleaning, and they'll be good as new.

Use second-hand furniture - with good eyes and patience, you can find a good deal from flea markets and second-hand stores. You can redo the furniture by repainting, changing the cover, updating the cushions or using new upholstery. Although you will spend for fixing, you will still save a lot more compared to buying brand new furniture.

Re-paint your walls - painting is one of the easiest and affordable tasks for home improvement. All you need are cans of your chosen paint and some brushes. A new room color will transform your home into a brand new place. Colors convey meanings, so choose colors that express your personality or those that reflect your desired mood. If you don't wish to stick to a theme, you can paint different colors in every room.

Even if you have wall to wall carpeting, you will be surprised at the impact that area rugs can make in your home. They can give your home a look of warmth and comfort. If you want to make an impact in any room, as well as add comfort and depth to the room, you can do so by using area rugs. You can choose from area rugs that are runners to those that are large enough to cover just about an entire room, and everything in between.

Add Decorative Painting

If you have never implemented decorative painting in your home, you can learn to do so easily by watching a video and getting a kit. You can use stamps and stencils as a way to make furniture, walls, cabinets and even the tile floor come to life. It costs very little money to paint decorative touches on walls using a kit and anyone can learn this art form. If you are afraid to do so right away on furniture, you can practice by using the stencils or stamps on poster board. This will allow you to implement the decorative touch to your home.

Use Throws and Pillows

Replace the cabinet handles - it's very easy and very cheap. No need to replace the whole cabinets. A new handle can have an impact on how the cabinet looks, from old to new.

Improving or changing how our house looks can be cheap, easy and fun! Be open to ideas, be creative and resourceful and don't be embarrassed to use second-hand stuff or low-priced materials. It's all about your decorating strategy. You know what they say about fashion - it's not the clothes, it's who wears the clothes.

Traditional Mexican Cooking Pots and Utensils

By KC Kudra

If you have enjoyed a Mexican meal with a Mexican family or at a good quality restaurant, there is a strong chance that traditional Mexican cooking pots and pan were used to make the meal. Mexicans use deep-frying, slow roasting and baking amongst other cooking methods and they have unique pots and pans for these. A lot of Mexican food is made with fresh produce such as vegetables, spices and herbs and you will find a mortar and pestle in any Mexican home, as well as a selection of sharp vegetable knives.

Authentic Mexican Cooking Pots

Barros or ollas are large, deep cooking pots made from clay. They are ideal to simmer stew, beans, or soup. Olla means pot and Barro means mud or clay. Clay is good for avoiding burnt spots in the food because it distributes heat evenly. It is also safe to place over a direct flame for hours.

You do need to warm clay before using it else; it might crack if you suddenly expose it to a high heat. If you are baking, you can let the pot warm up as the oven does. Your Mexican food will have a subtle earthy taste if you cook it in a clay pot.

Mexicans use Comals in cooking and a Comal is a large, round griddle made from aluminum, clay, or cast iron. These days, Comals usually have a non-stick finish. These are used to warm tortillas and roast chilies.

A cazuela is used for simmering mole and other sauces. This is a large, round clay dish, which is between five and seven inches deep. The outside might be painted in bright colors and the inside is glazed. A cazuela has handles so you can put it over an open fire.

An authentic Mexican tortilla press is called a tortillero. These used to be made from wood but are often made from cast iron now. Some tortilleros are made from aluminum but these often break. There are two round plates or wooden discs in a tortillero and a ball of masa is placed between them to make a tortilla.

Useful Mexican Utensils

A metate y mano is found in most Mexican kitchens and this is a platter sized, concave dish made from stone. It sits on three short legs on the table or three long legs so you can pull a chair up to it. There is a large, round stone, which you roll on the surface to grind or mix your ingredients.

A Mexican mortar and pestle is called a molcajete y tejolote and this is a small clay, wood or stone bowl with a long cylinder made of the same material. The cylinder is rounded on each end and you use it to pulverize the ingredients in the bowl by rolling the cylinder in a circular motion.

Hot chocolate is a popular Mexican drink and a wooden whisk called a molinillo is used to make froth on the top. You spin the molinillo between your hands to do this. Some are plain and others are highly decorated. The molinillo is a small but significant part of the exciting world of Mexican food customs. Even though it is possible to make delicious Mexican recipes without the proper equipment, it is more fun to use it. Mexican pots and tools look great displayed in the kitchen as well.

How To Turn A Lawn Into A Vegetable Garden

By Susan Honeywell

Lawns may look good, but they are unproductive, require a lot of care, and are environmentally unfriendly due to the high use of pesticides and fertilizers necessary to maintain them. As even the White House has discovered, turning a lawn into an organic vegetable garden is a much better use for the land.

Many people who would like to turn to organic vegetable gardening are put off by the idea that it must be a difficult and time-consuming endeavour, and that a lot of tilling and other back-breaking work is involved. In fact, if you follow some basic permaculture precepts and let nature do its work, it will be very easy work. Unless your lawn is contaminated by a lot of pesticides, you won't even have to remove the grass.

Start by marking off the area for your organic vegetable garden with string. The White House's vegetable garden is about thirty feet by thirty feet square, which is enough to feed a large family. But to start, you could do with a quarter of that space. Water the area thoroughly.

Next you need to add an area of ground mulch that contains some slow-release nutrients. A good mix is half-finished compost, grass clippings from the lawn, manure, rock phosphate, and sand. Finish off by covering the whole area with four to five overlapping sheets of newspaper.

Next you need to build a simple raised bed, made of planks, which you will put on top of the newspaper or cardboard. In due time the paper will decompose and become part of the organic base, but at first you will need it as a barrier between the early plants and the high-quality soil that you will now add.

The frames of the raised beds for your vegetable garden need to be filled with more organic compost, this time mixed with normal organic soil and some vermiculite for aeration.

Next, let everything be for a month or so. The lower layer will decompose, insects will arrive, the grass underneath will die off, and the whole area will naturally turn into a healthy and fertile ground for your organic vegetable garden without any need for tilling, ploughing or other hard work.

For planting, seedlings that have been grown in a greenhouse, inside the house or at a nursery are preferable to putting seeds in the earth right away. But both methods can be used. Organic herb and vegetable seeds are easily available through online stores.

To make sure that you'll enjoy the produce don't just pick the most typical plants for an organic vegetable garden, go for the ones that you like and that often turn up in your kitchen, and don't be afraid to leave any popular plants out. But make sure that you plant according to season.

If you have any children, make sure to involve them in the project early on, you will find that they will be very interested and fascinated by organic vegetable gardening, and will probably enthusiastically participate in the work, which is also going to be very character-building for them.

As for compost, you should start one or two composting heaps right away, as they will supplement and enrich your organic vegetable garden. You can supplement the compost from local materials, such as unused wood chippings from a local carpenter or the grass clippings from your neighbour's lawn.
